Prime Minister Mark Carney Tours Vienna House
Vienna House Sets the Stage for Build Canada Homes Announcement on Accelerating Sustainable, Innovative Affordable Housing
Lana Gill
On February 18th, 2026, Kindred Construction had the honour of welcoming the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, and Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, Gregor Robertson, for a site tour of the Vienna House project: a partnership between the City of Vancouver, BC Housing, Non-Market Housing Development, and More Than a Roof Housing Society.
As momentum builds across Canada to deliver housing faster, the seven-storey affordable housing development in Vancouver, B.C. has gained province-wide attention as a leading example of sustainable, high-performance construction, offering valuable, real-time insights to the industry as it moves toward completion.
Vienna House is designed to both strengthen the local community and expand access to safe, stable housing, while contributing best practices for delivering innovative, low-carbon, and affordable more broadly.
A Blueprint for the Future of Construction
With its focus on mass timber, prefabrication, and coordinated delivery, Vienna House reflects the very approach now being prioritized at a national level as governments look to accelerate housing delivery through scalable construction methods. The walkthrough was led by Kindred Construction Project Director, Sean Binns, and President, Bryan Reid, who showed how showed how these strategies can be implemented on the ground, balancing speed, quality, and sustainability.
This tour served as the backdrop for the announcement of the Government of Canada’s landmark Build Canada Homes agreement with B.C., an initiative aimed at accelerating the delivery of affordable housing while advancing a more productive, standardized approach to homebuilding.
This partnership marks the first phase of an ongoing collaboration between the federal government, and the province, and will include:
Up to $200 million from the province, plus up to $27 million annually in operating support over 10 years
More than 700 supportive and transitional homes, accelerated across B.C.
The agreement signals a broader shift in how housing will be delivered across Canada, prioritizing construction-ready projects, prefabrication, and repeatable design systems to reduce timelines and improve efficiency. In this context, Vienna House demonstrates the type of high-performance project model and delivery that future housing initiatives will increasingly rely on.
This milestone marks not only meaningful progress for the Vienna House project and the community it will serve, but also grounds Kindred Construction’s leadership in delivering the kind of innovative, scalable housing solutions that are shaping the future of construction in B.C.
