Our Story: 45 Years of Building with Kindred

1980’s

Our story began in 1980 in a small basement in Whistler, BC, led by our founders, Dick and Briony Reid. What started as a small project meant to renovate homes for friends & family quickly grew into something much bigger. A few years later, they relocated to the Lower Mainland and shifted focus to larger home renovations, transforming kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. By the late 1980s, the business had grown to the point where it moved into a building in Kitsilano, which became our first corporate headquarters. This milestone marked a turning point and laid the foundation for the growth that followed.

1990’s

By the end of the 1990s, our team had grown to 25 people, and the company was experiencing significant momentum as we won multiple awards throughout the decade that impacted us in a way no one could have imagined, it was our first taste of what’s to come in the following years. Among them was the prestigious Award of Merit for our collaboration with Bryan Adams, where Kindred was hired to transform his recording studio. That studio today remains Vancouver’s oldest operating warehouse studio.

2000’s

As our reputation for renovations grew, so did our scope of work. New opportunities in the broader construction industry began to emerge, and by the late 2000s, we had completed our first multi-family development in Vermeer. This 4-storey, 13-unit project was a rare concrete-style build and an important step forward in expanding our expertise and portfolio. By the end of the 2000s, we had completed over 50 homes and gained industry recognition, most notably for Mole Hill, a 21-unit heritage restoration project in Vancouver’s West End. The project earned both the Heritage Canada Award and the City of Vancouver Award for Honour and Achievement, showcasing our accomplishments and growth as a company.

2010’s

The Milestone in the West End sparked a wave of multi-family projects throughout the 2010s, introducing new clients and fueling steady growth. As our portfolio expanded to include multi-family, institutional, and commercial projects, large-scale builds quickly became our specialty. This diversification not only opened doors to new opportunities but also deepened our expertise across a range of build forms—from complex residential developments, like 50 Electronic, a 382,200 SF project, to highly technical institutional spaces. In turn, we carved out a stronger presence in Vancouver’s construction landscape, positioning Kindred as a trusted partner for projects of scale and complexity. In 2019, we refreshed our brand creating two distinct specialties—luxury custom home projects and large-scale developments—while remaining a united company. This evolution underscored and showcased the depth of talent we have here at Kindred.

2020’s

Our growth and experiences over the past four decades have brought us to this point—where today, Kindred is both a recognized and trusted builder in BC and an industry thought leader shaping the future of construction. We are delivering some of Vancouver’s most innovative projects, advancing the use of Mass Timber, Passive House, and prefabrication, and moving these approaches from concept to practical application. By sharing critical learnings from the job site, we are helping the industry understand the feasibility of these innovations and charting a path toward scalable adoption. Among our most pioneering projects—such as 981 Davie and Vienna House—we are also contributing directly to solutions for how sustainable and affordable housing will be built in Vancouver.

Today, Kindred is a passionate team of more than 130 employees and counting. With over 45 years of experience, we continue to expand and deliver projects with the same dedication that began in a small Whistler basement. As our expertise and influence grow, we’re confident that even bigger things are on the horizon for Kindred.
