Squamish Nation Edlers Centre Expansion

Description

The Squamish Nation Elders Centre Expansion is a community-led initiative designed by HCMA Architecture + Design. This 9,380-square-foot wood-frame project involves a thoughtful renovation and expansion of the existing Elders Centre to better support wellness, connection, and cultural programming for Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) Elders.

The building’s cedar façade serves as more than a durable, naturally resilient structural element; the design is inspired by a traditional Coast Salish longhouse, reflecting the Nation's culture and heritage. The design blends functionality with warmth through natural cedar finishes, wood-look luxury vinyl tile flooring, and oversized floor-to-ceiling windows along the north and south elevations. Accents of porcelain tile, acoustic felt panels, and rich paint tones further reflect the Nation’s deep connection to the land and culture while creating a durable, accessible, and welcoming environment.

Now under construction, the renewed Elders Centre will offer upgraded gathering spaces, dining and kitchen facilities, wellness rooms, and arts and culture areas—all built to foster community and care for generations to come.
