This complex project included a careful restoration and code upgrade of 27 heritage homes in Vancouver's oldest intact residential community. Taking up an entire city block in downtown Vancouver, the Mole Hill houses were fully overhauled and converted into 170 social housing units, three daycares, and a host of other community assets. The project received numerous awards including the National Environmental Achievement Award, the COV Heritage Award, and the VRCA Award of Excellence.
Kindred worked alongside the Mole Hill Community Housing Society and BC Housing on this community-based initiative, which demonstrated leadership in environmental and sustainable development. Geothermal heating and storm-water collection systems were used throughout, and up to 70% of the original materials were reused to minimise construction waste.
